"Jolly Roger" "Old Roger" "Jolie Rouge"

Such banners are called baucans and the people of England call them streamers, these banners mean death beyond remedy and mortal war wherever place those sailors are.

Some pirates or privateers used plain flags with a generally understood color symbolism - black for death, or red (the bloody flag of no quarter) for battle. However other colors were used as well, in 1717 an English ship was attacked to the west of Madeira by a French pirate

Some more indivdualistic or flamboyant pirate's of the 18th century added various symbols of death to their flags, for which the term "Jolly Roger", "Old Roger" or "Jolie Rouge" come into use.
